Wayanad lies at an altitude varying from 700 2100 metres above the sea level. The district has the highest number of tribal settlements in Kerala. The hill ranges of Vythiri taluk (taluk is a sub division of a district), through which the road from Kozhikode ascends the Wayanad plateau over the mind boggling bends and ridges, are the highest locations of Wayanad district.

Established in 1973, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is contiguous to the protected area network of Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka on the northeast and Mudumalai of Tamil Nadu on the southeast. Rich in biodiversity, the sanctuary is an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which has been established with the specific objective of conserving the biological heritage of the region. The sanctuary is very rich in flora and fauna. The management lays emphasis on scientific conservation with due consideration for the general lifestyle of the tribals and others who live in and around the forest region.

Wayanad district in Kerala, with its lush green landscape mostly covered with virgin forests and mist clad mountains forms a special part of ‘God’s own country’. The perennial streams and lakes are unique of Wayanad. The Lakkidi lake, Old Jain Temple, Wild Life Sanctuary etc. are important centers of tourists attraction.

Rivers

Kabani river, one of the three east flowing rivers of Kerala, is an important tributary of the river Cauvery. Kabani and its tributaries constitute a powerful river system in the land scape of Wayanad. Panamaram rivulet takes its origin from the perennial lake called, 'Pookode lake'. It flows swiftly through mountain gorges and joined by other streams, tumbles down into Panamaram valley. Six kilometres further from Panamaram, this river joins with the Mananthavady rivulet, originating from the lower regions of the peak 'Thondarmudi'. From this confluence onwards, the river is known as Kabani, a mighty, perennial river which after entering Karnadaka State, joins with the river Cauvery. Almost entire Wayanad is drained by the Kabani river and its tributaries, namely, Panamaram river, Mananthavady river and Thirunelli river.

It was in the lap of this green district that the Wayanad Social Service Society was established in 1974 for the development of Agriculture & Animal Husbandry, Community Health, Cooperative Credit Unions, Women’s Development, Skills Development (vocational), Housing etc.

Rich in wildlife, Wayanad's mountainous terrain houses the best in wildlife and spreads the aroma of coffee, cardamom and vanilla. Situated in the southern region of the Deccan plateau bordering Karnataka state, mercury dips to cooler Celsius. Untouched by rail or air traffic the only way you can inhale Wayanad's freshness is by road.

The name Wayanad, is believed to have been derived from the word, Vayalnadu, meaning the land of paddy fields. The present of Wayanad was carved out , from the parts of Kozhikode and Kannur districts and came into being on 1st November 1980 as the 12th district of Kerala. This backward district is, perhaps one of the biggest foreign exchange earners of the state, thanks to its cash crops of pepper, cardamom, coffee, tea, spices and other condiments.
