Location

The hill resort of Wayanad is situated in the north eastern part of Kerala, nestled among the mountains of the Western Ghats. It is at the height of 700 to 210 m above the sea level. The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is located 18 km east of Sultan Bathery. It actually spreads into two regions of Kerala Cannanore in the north and Calicut in the South. Wayanad, one of the fourteen districts in Kerala (India) is situated in an elevated picturesque mountainous plateau in Western Ghats.There is a land not far from Calicut, the city of Zamorins, yet a world apart from Kerala's agricultural and industrial epicentres. Located at a distance about 76 km. from the sea shores of Calicut in the Western Ghats, this station is full of plantations, forests and wildlife. Located between North Latitude 11°47' & 15°58' and East Longitude 75°47' & 70°27', district of Wayanad is on the southern tip on the Deccan plateau.

The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary comprises two districts of Kerala i.e. in the north; it is a part of the Cannanore district while its southern part is located in the Calicut district. The park extends from the latitude 11°15' in the North to the longitude 76°30' in the East. There is a good road network that connects the sanctuary with the other important places in Kerala.

The Edakkal caves are situated on the western side of Ambukuthimala, hill twelve kilometres southwest of the town of Sultan’s Battery, and about six kilometres east of Ambalawayal in the Wayanad District of Kerala. General elevation of the ground is some 1200 metres above the mean sea level, and the peak of Ambukuthimala at over 500 metres above the surrounding area is easily identifiable from a considerable distance. It is known to lie on an ancient route connecting the high ranges of Mysore to the ports of Malabar.

Located between the North Latitude 11027' and 15058' and East Longitude 75047' and 70027', district of Wayanad is on the southern tip of the Deccan plateau. On it's North, South and West lie the districts of Kannur, Malappuram and Kozhikode (Calicut ). To it's North and East, it borders the Karnataka districts of Coorg and Mysore . Further to the southeast lies the Nilgiri district of Tamilnadu.

The two rock caves of Edakkal Caves are amongst the major tourist attraction in Wayand. The hills are famous for the ancient carvings and pictorial writings dating back to New Stone Age and are situated in the Ambukuthy hills. The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is known for a wide range of flora and fauna. Topography

Wayanad lies between north latitude 110 27' and 150 58' and east 750 47' and 700 27'. It is bounded on the east by Nilgigris and Mysore districts of Tamilnadu and Karnataka respectively, on the north by Coorg district of Karnataka, on the south by Malappuram and on the west by Kozhikode and Kannur.
